Everything You Need to Know About Civil Services Exam 2017

The Civil Service Exam (CSE) is conducted across India by Union Public Service Examination. It is held nationwide and it is conducted to recruit to various civil services of India. Recruitment is also made for IPS – Indian Police Service, IAS – Indian Administrative Service and Indian Foreign Service.

Important Dates for Civil Services Exam 2017

UPSC Exams – UPSC has announced examination date for the year 2017 that will be held at the month of June. Below is a list of important dates.


22-02-2017 The day on which official notification will be out.
17-03-2017 The last day for submitting application form
18-06-2017 2017 Civil Service Exam – Pre.
28-10-2017 The day main examination will be conducted.


Examination Pattern

The Civil Services Exam is conducted at 2 levels: Preliminary Examination and Main Examination. Preliminary Examination comprises of two papers. They are completely objectives type questions based on general studies. The main examination comprises of 9 papers in total. They are mainly essay type. After two levels of examination, it will be followed by an interview which is basically a personality test. Pattern of Examination is illustrated in detail below.

There will be four Booklet series (Series A, B, C, and D) in the preliminary phase of 2017 Civil Service Examination. Question papers are available in both (Hindi and English) the language. As mentioned earlier the questions are of objective type. There will negative marking. That is there will be a penalty of one-third marks for each wrong answer.


Eligibility Criteria for Civil Services Exam

The candidate appearing for Civil Service Exam must possess a degree from a recognized universities that are integrated by Educational Institution that is well established by Parliament Act or the Act of State or Central Legislature in India. Refer the below criteria for other eligibility criteria.

Blind, Deaf, Orthopaedic – PH GEN/OBC = Nine Attempts, SC/ST= No bar. Forty Two Years
SC/ST No bar Thirty Seven Years
OBC Nine Attempts Thirty Five Years
General Six Attempts Thirty Two Years


Methodology to Apply Online

The interested candidates can find the application form from an official website. Click on apply online link present in a homepage. Fill in the details accurately. Once completed with filling all the details you have to submit signature and passport size photos with recommended sizes. Ensure that all details are filled accurately. The last process involves paying of application fees.

The last process involves paying of application fees. Application Fees can be paid through net banking or through cash. Reserved Category Candidates and Female candidates will be exempted from the fees.


Selection Process

As mentioned earlier selection process will be done in three stages. The candidates who qualify preliminary examination will be followed up by main exams and followed by interview. Below is a list of few posts were the candidates selected in the final round will be recruited.

  • Group B – Pondicherry Civil Services.
  • Group B – Armed Forces Headquarter civil service
  • Group B – Pondicherry Police Services
  • Group B – Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Delhi, Diu and Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli Civil Service.
  • Indian Foreign Service
  • Indian Police Service.


Admit Cards

The admit card for the preliminary phase of the examination will be released three weeks before examination. The candidates can download Admit card from official website of UPSC online. Before downloading the candidates have to enter their registration number.

The admit cards are available only online. If an admit card is not issued to an applicant then the candidate has to inform UPSC authority immediately to take necessary action. The candidates can make their enquiry at facilitations counters set up by UPSC office.

Announcement of Results

The results will be released in the form of a PDF file on the official website of UPSC. The candidates have to search through PDF for their roll number to see their results. The candidates who have successfully passed the preliminary examination will be eligible to attend main exams.
